Coordinate before landscaping

Bring a sketch showing the gas supply, proposed appliances, buildings, paths and finished landscape. Include future outdoor equipment in the conversation before trenches, patios or retaining walls are built. The route should be assessed as part of the complete gas system.

Locate existing services first

Arrange the required BC 1 Call process before ground disturbance and follow the utility’s current instructions. Ask which privately owned services also need locating; do not assume an old drawing shows every buried service. FortisBC explains the preparation and safe-excavation responsibilities in its contractor guidance.

Make the quote cover the whole job

Agree who handles locating, excavation, approved piping and transitions, protection, testing, inspection, backfilling and surface restoration. Depth, separation and material selection depend on the site and applicable requirements; a generic online diagram is not an installation design.

Keep a useful record

Ask for records of the completed route and relevant inspection information before the work is covered. Give future landscapers, fence installers and property managers the information they need to arrange fresh locates before disturbing the ground.

Bring these details to the conversation

  • Route sketch and property address
  • Appliance models and combined demand
  • Patio, fence and landscape schedule
  • Access, restoration and future-expansion needs

Common questions

Should the trench be dug before the gas fitter visits?

Coordinate the design and locating requirements first. A trench in the wrong place can conflict with other utilities, access or the approved pipe route.

Can regular indoor gas tubing be buried?

Do not assume that it can. The contractor must select a system and installation method approved for the actual underground application.
