SERVICE ILLUSTRATION · NOT AN INSTALLATION DIAGRAM

Planning for gas appliance removal, redundant pipework and safe decommissioning during renovations or equipment changes. Speak with Robert to confirm availability, qualifications and the scope for your property.

Define what is being retired

Explain whether the project removes one appliance, an unused branch or every gas appliance at the property. Provide photos of visible equipment and say which appliances must remain operational. An apparently unused pipe is not evidence that it is disconnected.

Include the utility where necessary

Work on customer piping and changes to a utility meter or service are different responsibilities. If the project removes gas from the property entirely, ask the contractor and utility to coordinate the required scope and timing.

Set the handover requirements

Ask how the completed work will be documented and how remaining pipework will be identified for future owners or trades. Establish who handles access, wall repairs, appliance disposal and any related electrical or venting work.

Arrange qualified isolation and testing

Technical Safety BC treats removal of gas equipment or a system as alteration work requiring the relevant permit. Isolation, any purging, termination and testing belong within the qualified contractor’s scope, not a homeowner checklist.

Bring these details to the conversation

  • Which appliances are staying and going
  • Any demolition or excavation dates
  • Visible pipe routes and access restrictions
  • Whether utility meter/service removal is requested

Common questions

Is turning off a valve the same as decommissioning?

No. A closed valve does not establish that the piping has been permanently and properly taken out of service. Have the intended removal scope assessed.

Can an old gas pipe be cut during demolition?

Do not cut a pipe because it appears unused. Arrange identification and qualified decommissioning before demolition starts.
