The short answer
A storage water heater keeps a tank of water ready for use. Gas and electric models have different installation requirements. Compare usable supply and recovery with your household’s busiest period, not tank volume alone.
Describe the demand that matters
List bathrooms, regular occupants and activities that overlap, such as showers and laundry. Explain whether the current issue is running out of hot water, a leak or inconsistent temperature. Provide the model label and service history without opening covers.
Measure the usable space
Share the cupboard or equipment-room dimensions, doorway access and photographs showing the surroundings. Ask the installer to confirm the clearances, service access and provisions required for the selected model. A nominal tank size does not establish that a replacement will fit.
Compare fuel changes as complete projects
Moving between gas and electric involves more than exchanging a tank. Ask about electrical capacity, gas work, venting and removal of the old equipment. Include disposal, commissioning and any related trades in the scope so competing quotes are comparable.
Consider alternatives before an emergency
If the existing tank is still operating, use the time to compare storage, tankless and heat-pump water heating. Explain your noise, space and timing priorities. For shared or strata equipment, identify the decision maker and who coordinates any water interruption.
Prepare for your assessment
- Current model and fuel
- Peak overlapping hot-water use
- Equipment-room and doorway dimensions
- Leak history and preferred timing
Common questions
Is a larger tank always the answer?
No. Demand, recovery, equipment space and the system design should be assessed together.
Can an electric tank replace a gas tank in the same spot?
Possibly, but the electrical supply and the full removal and installation scope require assessment.
