Heat the water, not the whole house
A heat-pump water heater transfers warmth from surrounding air into stored domestic water. Many hybrid models also have electric elements. This is a different job from a space-heating heat pump: ask which appliance supplies your taps and showers, and which heats your rooms. A new outdoor heat pump does not automatically replace your tank.
Rob Bee’s first question: where will it live?
Start your enquiry with a photo of the current tank and the room around it. Include its model label, current fuel, approximate age and whether the location is a cupboard, basement or garage. Keep covers closed and leave connections alone. The useful question is whether the proposed model fits the actual room and access route, rather than whether its cylinder looks the same size.
A tank needs more than a parking space
Airflow, room temperature, sound, service clearance and condensate drainage affect the location. Manufacturer requirements differ, so there is no single room-volume or temperature rule that fits every tank. Ask the assessor to explain the exact model’s requirements and any ducting proposal. A room that becomes cooler during operation may affect how you use the space and how the home supplies heat.
Plan for your busiest hour
Tell Robert about consecutive showers, baths, laundry, guests and any suite sharing the supply. Ask for storage, recovery and first-hour delivery information for the proposed equipment and operating mode. A nominal tank volume alone does not describe how it will handle your routine. Ask how backup elements affect recovery and energy use, and what control settings you will be shown at handover.
Compare the complete change
A useful written proposal includes the exact model, removal, plumbing, electrical work, drainage, permits, commissioning and exclusions. Confirm qualified trade responsibilities and local requirements. If changing from gas, ask what happens to the old appliance and its connections. Equipment shelf prices do not include every part of that conversion; compare whole proposals before deciding.
Check the water-heater rebate separately
As checked October 19, 2026, Better Homes BC has a distinct heat-pump water-heater category. Eligibility depends on the household, existing fuel, qualifying equipment and approved contractor. Confirm program approval before installation. A space-heating promotion or a competitor’s advertised rebate is not confirmation for your hot-water project. Use the current official requirements below; ask the administrator about your circumstances.
Bring Robert a useful brief
Send your city, property type, current fuel, equipment details, busiest hot-water period and any strata or access constraints. Ask Robert Hamilton about availability, an assessment and the scope BeeWarm can support. This Rob Bee guide is BeeWarm editorial planning information, not a claim that Robert has inspected your home or personally reviewed a particular product.
