Heat pumps in BC: start with your home, not the rebate

Start with the rooms you want to improve

A useful heat-pump conversation begins with how your home feels now. Note rooms that are difficult to heat, spaces that overheat in summer and whether the problem changes when doors are closed. Tell the contractor about suites, additions and the areas you expect the proposed system to serve. A short comfort brief gives the assessment a purpose beyond replacing one appliance with another.

Bring the existing system into the conversation

Record whether the home uses a gas furnace, electric baseboards, a boiler or another system. Include model information and recent service notes where available. Ask how the proposal will distribute heat and cooling, what happens to the existing equipment and which parts of the project remain subject to an assessment. Space heating and domestic hot water are separate requirements; a space-heating heat pump does not automatically replace your hot-water tank.

Ask how the layout was chosen

Ducted and ductless are starting descriptions, not complete designs. Ask how each bedroom and main living area will be served, whether existing ducts need work and how the proposal deals with closed rooms. Outdoor location, sound, access for maintenance, drainage, controls and the electrical supply belong in the same conversation. Request the building and equipment assessment behind the recommendation rather than choosing solely from a floor-area rule or the size of the old appliance.

Check the right rebate program before ordering

Better Homes BC’s current Energy Savings Program requires pre-registration and confirmed eligibility before installation. Household income, home type and existing heating affect the available support. Its rules changed for invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026. A rebate figure shown in a search result is not approval for your home. Use the official program page linked below, and ask which named program the contractor is quoting against.

A dated offer is not a general installation promise

As checked October 19, 2026, BC Hydro advertises a limited bonus of up to $1,000 for eligible upgrades completed, invoiced and paid between August 1 and October 31, 2026, with a complete application by November 30. Funding and eligibility conditions apply. Check the live offer before relying on it; BeeWarm is not promising a booking date, rebate approval or a particular saving through this article.

Keep the whole quote in view

Ask for the exact equipment, room coverage, installation work, permits, electrical coordination, removal, commissioning and handover documents. Put allowances and exclusions beside the price. Confirm who accepts responsibility for each trade and what happens if the assessment changes the scope. Compare complete proposals before subtracting a possible incentive from the budget.

Bring Robert a clear starting point

For a Lower Mainland enquiry, tell Robert your city, property type, current heating, comfort concerns and whether strata approval or tenant access is involved. Send a few non-sensitive equipment photos if useful. Confirm directly which equipment, qualifications and scope BeeWarm can support. A conversation should establish the next assessment step; it is not remote confirmation that a particular system or rebate is suitable.
