Underground Gas Lines for Outdoor Kitchens, Fire Tables and Pool Heaters

Originally published 2026-09-24

Adding an outdoor kitchen, built-in barbecue, fire table, patio heater or gas pool heater often starts with one question: how will the fuel reach the appliance safely?

An underground natural-gas line can remove the need for portable propane cylinders and keep a finished yard clean, but it needs to be planned before patios, retaining walls, planting and final grading are completed.

Plan the appliance load before the trench

The appliance input, pipe length, available pressure and other connected gas loads all affect line sizing. A route that works for a barbecue may not be adequate for a future pool heater or detached workshop. Have a licensed gas contractor review the complete plan before excavation begins.

For a broader planning overview, see the Metro Vancouver underground gas-line guide at GasFitter.ca.

Coordinate the gas line with the hardscape design

The cleanest projects coordinate the gas contractor, excavator and hardscape installer before work begins. The team should agree on the appliance locations, approved pipe route, required depth and protection, sleeve locations, shutoffs, access points and the order of inspections.

If pavers, concrete, stairs or retaining walls are involved, review restoration and layout options with a qualified hardscape contractor. Gas piping should never be buried or covered before required testing and inspection are complete.

Call before digging

Existing utilities must be located before excavation. Private lines such as irrigation, lighting, drainage or older yard services may require additional investigation because they are not always covered by public utility locating services.

Abbotsford and Fraser Valley projects

Fraser Valley properties often have longer runs, larger lots, outbuildings and phased landscape projects. Homeowners should plan the full future load instead of treating each appliance as a separate last-minute addition. Local property and contractor resources can also be found through Abbotsford.io.

Who completes the final connection?

Excavation and surface restoration may involve several trades, but gas piping, pressure testing, appliance connections and commissioning must be completed by appropriately licensed professionals. Bee Warm provides gas-fitting and HVAC service in Vancouver and parts of the Lower Mainland. Call 604-765-8424 to discuss the appliance, location and proposed route.
